My Commentary experience By Liam Palser...

Solihull Moors vs Gateshead on Tuesday 12th March

So this week I got my chance to do something I have waited for and dreamed about for a very long time - that was to commentate on a Solihull Moors game. I was so grateful to Luke Turner for organising it with a guy called Ben McPhillips from Switch Radio.

Prior to the game I was really nervous about it and did have second thoughts, but after a few words of encouragement from Luke I decided that I had to take the opportunity as it may not come around again.

As I waited down at pitch side for Ben, I was still pretty nervous but knew it was a great opportunity. When he finally turned up, he put me at ease immediately and off we went up to the press box. I had done my research before the game so I was fairly confident about what to say and how to go about it.

As we built up to the game Ben asked me a few questions on air about my role within the community and my experiences on being in and around the first team and all the backroom staff. As the game kicked off Ben was doing most of the commentary but referring to me every so often to get my thoughts on a player or an incident which for me was good because I didn’t feel like there was any pressure on me at all.

The first half was pretty eventful with good chances coming for both sides until the game turned ugly just before the half time break where Mike Williamson was dismissed for an off the ball incident involving Danny Wright. This would surely give Solihull the chance to kick on in the second half as the referee blew the whistle for half time.

During the half time interval Ben asked me a few more questions about the club and how the Community side of it will move the club forward. I just explained that I think the club is going in the right direction and that I have no doubt that there will definitely be more good times down here in the near future.

As the players returned out for the second half I was optimistic that Solihull were going to push on and come away with all three points. Like we expected Solihull started out right on the front foot with some good chances coming for them early on. The ball was cleared out for a corner, Darren Carter was over it with his trusty left foot he whipped the ball in right in the middle of the six yard area where Nathan Blissett pounced to head home and put Solihull 1 nil up.

Myself and Ben were very animated in the press box to say the least. Ben came to me so I could have my say on the goal and how I thought the game was going to pan out from here on in.

They really kicked on from there but were unlucky to see two efforts disallowed due to offside but nevertheless Solihull held on to clinch what was three vital points and move them back up to second in the National League.

All in all it had been a fantastic day for myself, a good win for the team I support and a great experience up in the press box with Ben.
