Moors Academy 3 Redditch Borough 0

Moors hit 99 league goals for the season - by Ronald Crane...

It wasn’t Moors Academy’s finest ninety but they got the job done and defeated a workmanlike Redditch Borough 3-0 to make it ten wins in a row.

Swirling around the stadium, storm “Gareth” did its best to disrupt matters but both sides coped with the stormy conditions rather well.

As the game wore on, icy rain complicated matters further, but the weather did not faze this young Moors side.

Although they didn’t have it all their own way and it was Redditch Borough who were fastest out of the starting blocks.

The away side forced a first minute corner, from which a shot was blocked before the ball found its way to Ben Maxwell in the Moors goal.

Speaking of Ben Maxwell, we must congratulate him for winning the “Goalkeeper of the Month award for February in Division Two”. A well-deserved triumph.

After that early wake-up call Moors did take control of the game and passed the ball about with real assurance. That said, they failed to create a lot.

Rubyn Gill shot over the bar, and a corner was wasted with the ball hit with far too much power.

Then, Michee Mbuti intercepted a Redditch pass in his own half. He made his way into the opposition area. However, he dwelled on the ball and the chance was gone.

Shortly after, the visitors’ goalkeeper was adjudged to have picked up a back pass and so an indirect free kick, no more than six yards out, was awarded.

With the Redditch defence all amassed on their own goal-line, Moors shifted the ball to Nathan Binner who thumped it home. 1-0 and the deadlock broken.

Redditch responded to the setback and Garvey was unlucky with a good shot that fizzed an inch past the far post.

Then, Moors raced up field and Nathan Binner was equally unlucky not to double the score. He was thwarted by a great save from Redditch goalkeeper Gandy.

Midway through the half, Redditch Borough began to press high, in order to prevent Moors from playing out the back. They succeeded, but the shot was off target.

There was then a delay when Arman Khooshkoo needed treatment. He was able to continue, but with a plugged nose.

Redditch were awarded a corner from which the Moors won the ball. Michee Mbuti passed to Rubyn Gill who with great aplomb, turned and scored. 2-0.

Right on half-time Gandy dropped the ball from a Moors corner, but before the home side could take advantage, the visiting defence cleared.

The second half was a bit of a non-event. Moors were controlling matters, although Redditch did up their game at the re-start.

However, there was little for them to shout about, managing just one shot on target in each half.

The Moors defence were having a good game, and were rarely troubled by the Redditch attack.

However, Garvey did have chances. First his header hit the bar, then he hit the inside of the post but thankfully for Moors, no damage was done and it stayed 2-0.

At the other end, it was that final ball that was wanting for the Moors. A reluctance to shoot, and being guilty of not passing to a team-mate in a better position.

With the visitors tiring, Moors were awarded a free kick right on the right hand side of the Redditch area. Martin’s kick was turned in by Dylan Barkers.

Referee Gaspara consulted his assistant Mart Shutt, the goal stood and Redditch’s keeper was shown a yellow card.

It was not pretty, but it was a win. The tenth on the trot. Barker’s goal being the ninety ninth scored be Moors in the league, this season.

It gives Moors Academy a goal difference of 64, by far the largest in the Division Two. In fact, it is bettered only by Heather St Johns at the top of Division One.

Afterwards, Moors Manager, Sam Manoochehri, said “It was a tough win against tough opposition.”

Next Saturday, 23rd March 2019, Young Moors visit Heath Hayes of Division One for a friendly match. Kick off at Coppice Colliery Ground, Newlands Lane, Heath Hayes, Cannock, WS12 3HH is at 3pm.

Moors: Maxwell; Mbuti; Hirst; Jones; Thomas; Kendrick (Barkers [88]; Khooshkoo (Jordan Clarke); Binner [20]; Gill [37]; Andrews; Martin. Subs not used: Sephton; McNally & Whitehouse.
