*Late heartbreak for Money's Moors on Non-League Day*
PUBLISHED: 7th Oct 17

A record home crowd witnessed a spirited Solihull Moors performance denied by a last-gasp winner for the visiting Hartlepool United side.

With new manager Richard Money taking his place in the dugout for the first time, Moors deserved at least a share of the spoils before Jonathan Franks popped up with a 90th minute goal to disappoint the 2,658 crowd in attendance at the Automated Technology Group Stadium on Non-League Day.

In a scrappy first-half, Moors created the better chances. In the ninth minute Wes McDonald latched onto a through ball from Liam Daly on the right but lifted his shot over the on-rushing Scott Loach and just wide of the post.

Just after the quarter hour mark, captain Darren Carter hit a sweetly-struck shot from 20 yards out which whistled inches over the bar.

It was not until the 31st minute when the visitors registered an attempt on target with a tame effort which bobbled straight to keeper Nathan Vaughan. Five minutes later striker Dapo Afolayan had a fierce effort kept out by Loach at full stretch.

Just a minute before the interval, midfielder George Carline came closest to putting The Moors in front when he ghosted in at the far post to meet a Carter cross, only to see his header acrobatically tipped onto the woodwork by Loach.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 0-0 Hartlepool

Hartlepool introduced two substitutes for the start of the second period and they had an instant impact as Rhys Oates slotted home with his first touch inside a minute of the re-start following a slick move down the left.

It took the Moors a while to regain a foothold in the game as midfield linchpin Courtney Richards tried to drive the team forward at every opportunity. He tested the keeper with two shots from distance, in between an opening which Carline created with some neat control before his placed left foot shot was grabbed low down by Loach.

Inside the last 15 minutes, Money switched Moors from 4-4-2 to five across the middle, and it was Shepherd Murombedzi on the right flank who picked out Kristian Green, now playing as a left winger, with an inviting cross which he nodded just wide.

With five minutes remaining on the clock and Hartlepool trying to see the game out, second-half substitute Richard Brodie made a nuisance of himself in the box and was bundled over by Laing, referee Donohue had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Carter coolly sent the keeper the wrong way to give The Moors a deserved late equaliser.

But it was all in vain as the game headed into injury time. Moors failed to deal with a deep free-kick and the ball fell for Franks inside the penalty area and he lashed it past Vaughan, to cue wild celebrations from the Hartlepool bench and the 300 fans who had made the trip from the north east.
