Solihull Moors Ladies 2 Steel City Wanderers 3
Close but City Wanderers Steel the Points
PUBLISHED: 8th Feb 18

Sunday saw Solihull Moors host Steel City Wanderers at a sunny but bitter Tally Ho in what was a feisty affair from the start. With both teams eager to pick up all three points, the tempo was high in what ultimately turned out to be a frustrating undeserved loss for the Moors.

Kicking off at 2pm, Moors enjoyed an explosive start, really pressuring the visitors from the offset; the attacks came in thick and fast but frustratingly no early goals, with the closest effort cleared off the line by Steel City defence. However just 10 minutes in it was Steel City on the attack, with Attrill (12”) slotting in a rebounded effort to put them 1-0 up. Moors had little time to recover when backline confusion saw Steel City 2-0 (14” Smith) just 2 minutes later.

Important not to let their heads drop, Moors began talking to each other more which led to some lovely football, the ball was whipped into the box, connecting with Jones, causing the Steel City keeper to pull off a wonderous save. Moors on the attack again a few minutes later, saw the ball passed around the box before being nudged in by Jones (20”). Moors 1 – 2 Steel City.

A slight lull in the initial excitement saw the tempo of the match change a little with both teams enjoying periods of possession but also defending fiercely to deny the other any breaks. Steel City with an offside chance denied, before sending the ball flying past the goal on the follow up attempt. Whilst Moors see their corner returned up field by the Steel City defence.

Frustration began to spill over on the pitch with some dubious challenges, resulting in commotion which saw Steel City’s Middleton receive a yellow card. Minutes later it was a straight red for Moors Amy Pashley. Moors would have to rally together in the second half as they dropped to 10 women.

2-1 to the visitors at half time.

As the second half got underway it was Steel City making themselves known on the pitch, and within minutes they were 3-1 up (Attrill 49”)

Moors seemed to them pick up some momentum and started to drive forward, despite some solid defending from Steel City, Moors see two great changes both just shy of the goal. Moors continue to push, a big call for handball is waved away by the ref but the next pass sees Steel City concede a foul and it's a free kick just outside the box to Moors. Moors fail to make it count.

Changes were made by both sides, and the game lulled a little as the teams switched around. Though it wasn’t long before Moors were on the attack once more; a lovely ball straight through sees Davies make a cracking run and slot in Moors second (73”). Moors 2 – Steel City 3.

Moors did not rest; you’d be hard pushed to notice they were the team with 10 as they continued to push on. A unconvincing offside call saw a beautifully worked goal from Moors with Jones nipping in Dickinson’s cross ruled out (77”).

Solihull continued to dominate but couldn’t find a final goal to make the draw.

FT: Moors 2 – 3 Steel City.

A well fought display from the Ladies who were unlucky to not take something from the game.

Manager, Sarah Westwood on the result:

“For large parts of the game we were the better team, dominating possession and territory. Unfortunately, going 2-0 down early on and then to 10 just before half time proved too much to overcome. However we continued to battle until the final whistle, and I believe we deserved a point, if not all three. I’m really pleased with the character and work rate the girls showed, they did themselves proud on the pitch”

Moors:  Parkes, Davies, Kirk (Grieve 62), Pashley, White, Plumb, Green, Taylor (Parkes 77), Jones, Dickinson, Taylor
