Moors Academy 2 Coton Green 3

Ron Crane reports on a narrow defeat...

For this match Bobbie Biddle made his debut in goal, Jerome Clarke, Elie Ikwa and Keziah Martin all returned, and Owen Bennett had a place on the bench. Josh Parsons was injured, Rubyn Gill unavailable and Jordan Clarke suspended.

Right from the start, the Moors put their visitors under pressure with a great cross from the right that was missed by all. With just two minutes there was a tremendous mix-up in the home defence. Eventually they did clear the danger, but it was a foretaste of things to come.

Coton Green tried the long ball and it the resulted in a shot that Biddle parried away. Then they made progress down their right flank that led to a shot by Green that defeated Biddle to open the scoring.

Time and again the home defence was guilty of unnecessary passing in their own area. One felt that eventually it would cost them, and it did, and not for the first time this season.

Moors responded to the set back with a series of attacks, none of which produced a goal because of an inaccurate effort or sound defence. The home defence came under more pressure and Biddle came way out of the area and was adjudged to have fouled his man. With the visiting supporters screaming for him to be sent off, referee Pail Sudbury showed him the yellow card.

Although Moors went in search of the equalising goal, one felt they were always vulnerable in defence and the attacking force unimpressive.
For the re-start Sam Manoochehri made two changes, Arman Khooshkoo and Shuja Mahmood came on for Dylon Bennett and Elie Ikwa. The change made an immediate impression. Karmol Campbell seemed to be rejuvenated. Having switched to the left flank he gave the visiting defence a torrid time. Shuja, playing down the middle, was also having a degree of success. He robbed his man, made progress, passed – inch perfect – to Kamol who made no mistake to equalise.

But one could not ignore the errors in the Moors defence and Graham profited from a long ball that was allowed to bounce. He took control and Coton Green were back in front.

The second half was a fantastic spectacle for the neutral, although I confess that my heart was under strain! Both teams were going for the win. Coton Green were not resting upon their laurels, and Moors were searching for another equaliser. When it came, it was the best goal of the afternoon. A corner from the left was headed back across the six yard area for Campbell to score his, and Moors Academy’s, second and equalising goal. It was no more that the home side deserved.

However, there was still time for the home side self-destruct. With 13 minutes to go there was a real mess in Moors’ defence. Did Biddle have the ball under control? Was the ball kicked from his hands? Whatever, the ball was tapped into the unguarded net from one yard by Yonwin.

There was a consultation by the officials and it was decided that the goal would stand. Whatever the substance of the home complaints, the truth is that the ball ought to have been cleared well before the controversial incident.

It was not over by any means. As Moors went in search of their third equaliser of the match, Jerome Clarke was jostled and he pushed the player away, but in the face. It was, as it had to be, a straight red card. Moors played out the final six minutes with ten men.

At the end Coton Green were worth their three points.
