Moors Academy fall to sucker punch - by Ron Crane
Back at The Pavilions for the second Saturday in a row, this time for the Quarter Final of the President’s Cup.
Bobbie Biddle began in goal, Aman Solomon came in for Keziah Martin who started on the bench. It was a nasty cold, rainy and wet Saturday afternoon.
The match got off to a terrible start for the visitors. A sloppy pass in midfield let Town on to the attack. They won a corner and Jarrett bundled the ball over the line according to the referee’s assistant. It was the worse possible start for the Moors. But, they did respond and forced a corner of their own from which Town broke away for an attack. Shuja Mahmood had two shots, one saved the other wide.
The Moors continued to be the team on the attack, there were crosses, but too many were missed. Then it got much worse when Fearon scored from the left side. It was Town’s second shot, and their second goal.
For the rest of the first half, it was Moors playing the football and playing in their opponents half of the park. With seconds of the half to go, Sephton made progress down the left for Rubyn to hit the post, Solomon dispatched the rebound home. It was not more than the visitors deserved.
But: truth to tell; it had been a terrible half of football and not a good advert for the game. Of those on the pitch, there were more mistakes than anything. A match littered with errors.
After the re-start the Moors set about righting the wrongs of the first half. It is no exaggeration to say that they had 75% of territory and possession, yet managed just seven goal attempts, five of which were on target. In every other area of the game they were superior. Yet Town held on until Mahmood benefited from a beak our of defence to score. Then, with fifteen minutes to go, Campbell pounced on the rebound from Gill’s effort. All the Moors had to do was keep the ball, which they did rather successfully until three minutes from the end when a speculative short was allowed through the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net.
It was a cruel blow and the penalty shoot out meant Town when through four – two. Once again these young Moors side had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
