Tipton Town 3 Moors Academy 2
Clarke's brace fails to save Moors - by Ronald Crane
This match was played in terrible weather conditions, rain sweeping across the park, a strong a cold wind, temperature about 1 or 2 degrees.
That is not to say the pitch was unplayable – it was hard in places, but playable.
Town kicked off and immediately set up an attack. Davies racing into the Moors area unmarked, right from the kick-off . He managed the same trick more times in the early stages of the match, before drifting into a more central position.
Rubyn Gill had a couple of chances, one was saved, the other over the bar from 20-yards. Coming up to the half-hour, the Moors were awarded a free kick on the very right hand point of the penalty area. Martin’s kick was headed home by Jordan Clarke. Town tried to respond, and – once again – a defensive mistake allowed the impressive Terrance Davies to score from an almost impossible angle.
A couple of nasty challenges by Broadway were punished by a free kick, but nothing else. With six minutes of the first half to go Mbuti produced a cross that was tapped home by Clarke for his second. So it was at half time, but would Moors rue allowing Town that goal?
It was a rejuvenated Town that took the field for the second period. The more Town showed that they wanted to win this game, the more the Moors looked as if they did not like the conditions at all. Two more defensive errors by the young Moors let Town have two shots, both were off target. But it was a warning that the Moors would have done well to take. They did have the chance to go three, one, but unfortunately Clarke fluffed his lines on the goal-line.
Town were getting joy along Moors flanks, and Davies headed home his second on the hour mark. As we approached the finish line, it was Town who were making the running, and it was no real surprise with, with 10 minutes to go, Broadway – who many in the visiting section of the crowd thought luck to still be on the park – took a needlessly giving away free kick some 30-yards out from Moors goal. His shot hit the top corner of the net and gave Ben Maxwell (who had replaced the injured Bobbie Biddle) no chance.
Town played out most of the rest of the game by Moors corner flags, and that was that. Once again the young Moors had given their opponents gift wrapped goals. It is Tipton Town who go into the last eight of this competition. To be fair, it was they who adapted to the conditions and who deserved their victory.
