Solihull Moors kicked their 2022/23 pre-season campaign off with a 1-0 victory at Alfreton Town.
Summer signing Alex Reid scored the only goal of the game, netting from a tight angle shortly before the half-time interval.
As expected, manager Neal Ardley gave every player in the matchday squad minutes – that squad included new recruits Reid, Louie Moulden, and Joey Jones.
All three of them started, while there were also places in the squad for three trialists and five Elite Academy players.
Morgan Owen started the game, with Jack Myatt, Ross Evans, Tyler Bruck and Callum Scott all coming on in the second half.
Kyle Storer was unavailable due to injury, along with long-term absentees Ryan Boot, Justin Donawa and Matt Preston.
Ryan Barnett was the first to try his luck for the visitors in boiling hot conditions at the Impact Arena. He received the ball on the edge of the area after Jones had moved in field from his centre back position, however Barnett’s left-footed strike was dragged wide of the mark.
10 minutes later, Jamey Osborne whipped a free-kick right onto the head of Reid who made good contact, but nodded into the gloves of the goalkeeper.
Patient play on the right-hand side from Barnett then followed with a low cross to the edge of the box where Owen was waiting as he fired over the top.
At the other end, Alfreton broke and were two v two against Moors. The ball was cut back for Matt Rhead who was unable to keep his effort down.
And four minutes before the break, Moors’ Reid pounced as the home side gave the ball away and the on-loan Stockport County striker finished beyond George Willis from a tight angle.
Half-time: Alfreton Town 0-1 Solihull Moors
There were a flurry of half-time changes made by Ardley as five faces entered the fray, including Callum Howe, Joe Sbarra, James Clarke, Andrew Dallas and Evans.
Sbarra had a decent opening to make it two from close range, but the goalkeeper stood firm to make a save.
From the resulting corner, Dallas saw his goal-bound glancing header tipped over the top of the bar.
Myatt was forced into action twice late on as he first got down low to push a free-kick away from the bottom corner, before then thwarting a one v one with his body.
