Notts County v Solihull Moors
Notts County v Solihull Moors

Moors' unbeaten start to the season ended as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Notts County at Meadow Lane on Bank Holiday Monday.

Adam Chicksen proved to be the matchwinner for Notts, converting Matt Palmer's cross, midway through the second half.

As for the visitors, it was an afternoon of limited chances for Neal Ardley's men who came up against a tough defence that proved hard to break down.

However, Moors' biggest moment came in the way of a decision which disn't go their way. Andrew Dallas running into the box looked to have been upended but the referee waved away the appeals.

Going into the game, boss Ardley shuffled his pack. Reiss McNally came into the side as did Josh Kelly, who was rewarded with a start following his goal against Dorking Wanderers.

Callum Whelan was also brought into the starting line up, Callum Maycock the man to make way.

Jamey Osborne had the first attempt for Moors inside the opening 10 minutes but his shot from distance was well handled by Sam Slocombe in the home net.

Notts were largely in control with the tricky RĂºben Rodrigues and Maccauley Langstaff looking lively as part of a front three.

Midway throught the half, the Portuguese jinked his way into the box but his shot was well charged down.

That same combination of Rodrigues and Langstaff continued to threaten. This time Rodrigues released Langstaff, who beat the defender but found Louie Moulden in his way, the Moors keeper forcing the striker wide and he fired off target.

It was then Moors' turn to come close. Having worked his way into the box, Joe Sbarra got his shot away but a big block from Richard Blrindley blocked his path to goal.

As half-time loomed, it was end to end stuff and it was soon Moors in need of last ditch defending. Rodrigues' effort looked goalbound but James Clarke did brilliantly to clear off the line.

A close call for Ardley's side who having survived a late scare, went in level at the break.

The second forty-five started in much the same way and Clarke was called on again to make another goal-saving block, throwing his body on the line to deflect Langstaff's shot away for a corner.

Then came a moment for debate, Dallas cut into the box from the left wing, the covering defender appeared to impede the flying Scotsman but the referee saw different and no penalty was awarded.

It proved to be a big decision, as moments later Moors' resolve was broken. Chicksen's first time finish giving the hosts the lead.

In the visiting dugout Ardley reacted to falling behind. The Moors boss bringing Maycock and Alex Reid off the bench as the visitors looked to freshen things up in search of an equaliser.

In the closing stages, Dallas latched onto a long ball but he was unable to hit the target.

Try as they might Moors just couldn't find the spark they needed and as the game drew to its conclusion, it was more likely Notts adding to the score than it was Moors levelling.

It had been a valiant effort from the men in red but ultimately Moors fell to their first defeat of the season.

They won't have long to dwell on it though as Moors are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Altrincham to the ARMCO Arena.
