Solihull Moors were held to a hard-fought draw on their opening home fixture of the 2022/23 Vanarama National League campaign by Southend United.

Andrew Dallas got the Moors off to a flying start, before the visitors grabbed a foothold in the contest and equalised through Chris Wreh in the second half.

Manager Neal Ardley admitted post-match that the point was as much as his side deserved despite a late appeal for a penalty.

Team News

Ardley named an unchanged side from the one that began the 2022/23 campaign so impressively with a 4-1 victory over Aldershot Town last Saturday.

There was, however, a place on the bench for new signing Ethan Vaughan who was added to the Moors ranks earlier in the day.

As for the visitors, they made three changes to the starting eleven including a debut for midfielder, Jaden Crowhurst.

The Match

In temperatures rising up to 33 degrees, it was Southend who had the first big chance with just four minutes on the clock. Following a loose back pass, Callum Powell rounded goalkeeper Louie Moulden but with the goal at his mercy could only fire wide.

Despite the visitors early promise it was the Moors who opened the scoring after 13 minutes through Dallas.

The Scotsman latched onto a cutting-edge Callum Maycock through ball to slot past Steve Arnold from eight yards out. A second goal in as many games for last season’s top scorer.

Moors continued to dominate large periods and went close again through Ryan Barnett. He found himself in acres of space on the right but his drilled effort was well saved by Arnold in the Shrimpers net.

The away side showed glimpses of their threat throughout and came closest through debutant, Crowhurst who’s deflected shot forced a brilliant reaction save from Moulden.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 1-0 Southend United

After the break it was Southend who gained the upper-hand and looked more likely to get back on level terms.

Following some smart link-up play, Wreh curled a brilliant left-footed effort into the top corner from outside the penalty area following a lay-off from Callum Powell.

Kevin Maher’s Southend side continued to push and had a couple of half-chances saved before the Moors pushed for a late winner.

With 75 minutes gone, Moors substitute Josh Kelly found himself one-on-one with Arnold but his left footed effort was well saved by the Shrimpers number one.

Then came a decisive moment with two minutes of the 90 to play. Dallas went down in the area appealing for a penalty, however, referee Scott Jackson booked the Moors striker for diving, much to the frustration of Ardley and the Moors faithful.

Moors did have one more half-chance before the final whistle, as Callum Whelan blazed his shot over from inside the area leaving the hosts to settle for a point.
