Solihull Moors v Walsall

Walsall were 2-0 winners at the ARMCO Arena as Solihull Moors played their penultimate pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon.

Goals in each half from Danny Johnson and Andrew Williams were enough to give the Saddlers the victory.

Team News

Manager Neal Ardley switched the system to 3-5-2, with Fiacre Kelleher, Callum Howe, and Alex Gudger the back three.

New signing Josh Kelly was on the substitutes bench, while Kyle Storer, Reiss McNally and Andrew Dallas were still missing through injury.

The Match

There was an early chance for the home side as Howe, who scored the winning goal against Birmingham City on Tuesday, found himself in a similar position to head into the gloves of Owen Evans.

And Moors so nearly produced a sublime goal following a glorious passage of football. Ardley’s men worked the passing move superbly well, before Callum Maycock was there to strike as he was denied by Evans.

Another slick move from Moors saw them counter as Trialist B nutmegged his opponent in his own half before starting an attack. James Clarke then fed Joe Sbarra in space down the right before the midfielder cut the ball back for Trialist B who saw his deflected effort tipped over the bar.

Walsall took the lead seven minutes before the half-time interval as Johnson prodded home from close range following a low cross into the six-yard area.

Moors had Louie Moulden to thank as the ‘keeper produced an incredible reaction save to thwart Taylor Allen from point blank range, as the score line remained at one going into the break.

Half-time: Solihull Moors 0-1 Walsall

Ardley made a triple change on the break with Kelly on for his debut, along with Jamey Osborne and Ryan Barnett.

A fierce strike from Isaac Hutchinson whistled just high and wide of Moulden’s right-hand post.

Back at the other end, Alex Reid nodded just over the top of the bar as Moors pushed for a leveller.

However, the Saddlers doubled their lead on 74 minutes as Williams was played in on goal before emphatically finishing past Moulden.

Solihull came close to pulling one back in the closing stages as Osborne saw an effort deflect just over the top, before Reid headed off the crossbar following a Barnett cross.
