Coventry Sphinx v Solihull Moors
Coventry Sphinx v Solihull Moors

There was more history for Solihull Moors Women on Sunday afternoon as they dismantled Coventry Sphinx 5-1 to reach the Vitality FA Cup Third Round.

Tom Blaymires' side had already achieved history by reaching the Second Round for the first time ever, however, went another step further on Sunday with another fine win.

There were five different scorers for Moors who came from behind having conceded in the early stages.

After Cheryl Edwards restored parity just before the break, Amber Downs, Shannon McFadden, Zoe Creaney and Emmalee Hornsby all notched second half goals to send the Moors into Monday's draw.

Team News

Blaymires made three changes from the side that went out in the Birmingham County Cup last Sunday.

Edwards, Lyndsey Ross-Baker and Jenna Roberts all returned to the side, whilst Creaney led the team out.

The Match

It was a game that Moors expected to win against their lower ranked opponents, and they looked lively inside the opening 10 minutes, first Edwards was played through one-on-one with five minutes on the clock but she saw her effort saved by the hosts 'keeper.

With 12 minutes on the clock the Sphinx 'keeper was again called into action, Tiana Russell-Cartwright broke free on the right-hand side of the area and drilled a low shot but again the shot-stopper stood firm.

Despite that promising beginning, it was Sphinx who took the lead against the run of play. A long free-kick from virtually the half-way line was met by a forward in the box and nodded past Harley Savage for 1-0.

It was a wake-up call for Blaymires' side who threatened with their extra quality but struggled with their end product.

With half-time quickly approaching they began to turn the screw. When Eva Rodgers had a pop-shot from the edge of the area that needed to be turned around the post, the signs were there for the hosts, then moments later Moors did indeed get their equaliser.

Eva Rodgers, operating in the left channel, burst away from her marker and drove into the penalty area, her effort appeared to be heading for the bottom corner when the goalkeeper stuck a leg out to deny, however, despite the fine stop it fell only to Edwards who had a simple task to finish into an empty net from six yards.

Half-time: Coventry Sphinx 1-1 Solihull Moors

For all Moors' intricate play, it was a moment of magic from Downs that put them ahead. The defender was given time and space on the left-hand side, with one thought in her mind she let fly and saw her effort rocket into the top right corner - a stunning goal worthy of winning any game.

From then on it was all about the visitors, the ever-threatening Russell-Cartwright used her pace again to get round the defence and tee up Edwards who couldn't execute her shot when she knocked it just wide.

Moors did get their third on the 68th minute mark to all but seal the tie. From the right again, the ball fell to McFadden who slammed home from the edge of the area into the roof of the net.

Although the game felt secure, Sphinx never stopped believing and forced a couple of close chances of their own with Savage being called into action on a couple of occasions. However, it was Creaney who put the game beyond any doubt when she powered home a header from a corner with 13 minutes to play.

It could have been more for Moors who showcased some lovely football in the second half, Hornsby was almost the provider when she dinked a lovely ball into the path of fellow substitute Katie Jamieson who couldn't keep her half-volley down with the goal at her mercy.

Moments later though, it was Hornsby who added extra gloss onto the score-line. Again, Russell-Cartwright burned two Sphinx defenders with her pace, before brilliantly picking out Hornsby who slid her shot home to complete the scoring.

A fine display in the end from our Moors Women as they advance into tomorrow's Third Round draw.
