Solihull Moors captain Darren Carter will swap football boots for running shoes as he gets set to compete in the SimplyHealth Great Birmingham 10k run.

The event - that takes place on Sunday, May 6 – will mark the start of a journey that the Moors midfielder hopes to embark on once his playing days are over.

While full focus is currently on helping Solihull Moors retain their Vanarama National League status, Carter has revealed his secret passion for running.

The 34-year-old said: “I’m really looking forward to the SimplyHealth Great Birmingham 10k.

“I’ve never run this far in one go before and entering my first running event in my home city will be special.

“Entering running events is something I’ve always thought about.”

The 6.2 mile challenge, described as a great training run for those taking on the half marathon or marathon, starts in Birmingham city centre and passes by sights including Selfridges building, Cannon Hill Park and Edgbaston Stadium.

‘Carts’ sees the 10k as a stepping stone to bigger and better things, with the New York Marathon just one of many targets as he plans to enter events across the globe after retirement.

“Hopefully, I can continue playing for another two, three, four seasons but when I hang up my boots, I’ll look to do the Great Birmingham Run half marathon and progress from there,” He added.

“Running marathons around the UK and across the world is something I’m really interested in doing.

“Because of my playing career, I’ve never really been able to consider it before, but the Great Birmingham 10k falls just outside our season, which is great.

“I’m buzzing to do it, it should be great fun.”
