Everything you need to know about our opponents

Aldershot Town was founded in 1992, after Aldershot FC were forced to fold due to financial troubles. The original Aldershot side had been in the Football League since 1932 and competed in the Third and Fourth Divisions regularly.

In 1992, Aldershot Town began life competing in the Isthmian League Division Three, winning the title in their debut season, and again in 1994.

In the 1997/98 season, Aldershot won the First Division title, getting crowds of over 4,000 fans in the seventh tier in their final game of the season at home to Berkhamsted Town – a league record.

Success continued with the club winning successive Hampshire Cups in the 1998/99 and 1999/00 seasons.

In the 2000/01 season saw the Shots play league opposition in the FA Cup for the first time, as Brighton visited the Recreation Ground – Brighton winning 6-2 in the first round.

In the 2002/03 campaign, Aldershot made it to the highest tier of non-league football by winning the Premier Division. After 11 years, the club had achieved four promotions to play in the Conference as they ended the season with over 100 points.

The 2003/04 season was a positive one for the club as they made the second round of the FA Cup, eventually losing 1-0 to Colchester United. In the FA Trophy, the Shots reached their first semi-final, losing to eventual winners Hednesford Town.

In the league, the club finished fifth in the regular season, and played in the play-off final. At the Britannia, Aldershot lost on penalties to Shrewsbury Town after drawing 1-1 after extra-time.

Aldershot finished in the play-off positions in the following season, as they ended the league campaign in fourth place; but it was not enough as they lost to eventual winners Carlisle United in the semi-finals.

The next two seasons were less successful for the Shots. In 2005/06, the club struggled to a 13th place finish; before finishing ninth the following year.

The 2007/08 season was Aldershot’s best season yet, as they won the Conference Premier with a then-record 101 points, and were promoted to the Football League for the first time. The club also won the Conference League Cup after a penalty shootout win over Rushden & Diamonds.

In League Two, the Shots finished 15th in their first season before the 2009/10 season resulted in the club’s highest ever finish. The club finished sixth in the regular season, making the playoffs. However, the team lost 3-0 on aggregate to Rotherham United.

Two more seasons of midtable mediocrity followed for the club, as they finished 14th and 11th in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons respectively.

However, in the 2012/13 season, the club suffered major financial issues and after finishing in last place in League Two, Aldershot entered administration with debts over £1 million.

In the Football Conference, the Shots struggled to avoid relegation in each of their first three seasons in the division. 19th and 18th place finishes were followed by a 15th place finish in the 2015/16 season.

The 2016/17 season was more successful as the club finished 5th in the league, qualifying for the playoffs. In the playoffs, Aldershot lost 5-2 on aggregate to Tranmere Rovers in the semi-finals.

Another fifth place finish followed in the 2017/18 season, again qualifying Aldershot for the playoffs. However, the club were beaten in the qualifiers by Ebbsfleet United 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Recreation Ground.

Since then, Aldershot Town have never reached the heights of the playoffs since that campaign, with their highest league finish being 15th for the last five seasons.

So far this season

After finishing 18th last season, Aldershot are hoping to improve of their league position, and so far have picked up 18 points after 14 games.

Last time out, the Shots lost 2-1 away to Altrincham.

Ahead of this game, Aldershot will start the day 13th, in the league table.

Key player to watch

One player who could cause problems is Aldershot’s striker Lorent Tolaj, after his move from Brighton in the summer.

Tolaj began his career in his native Switzerland, playing for FC Sion at youth level. For the club, he averaged a goal every two games at youth level.

This caught the interest of Premier League club Brighton in 2018 and would play 19 games in his first season with the club, scoring 10 goals in the U18 Premier League.

In the 2019/20 campaign, Tolaj made 21 appearances across all competitions for the Seagulls and scored 11 goals.

In January 2022, Tolaj made his first loan move to League One club Cambridge United until the end of the season. However, after only making five appearances for Cambridge, Brighton recalled the striker.

In the 2022/23 season, Tolaj signed for League Two team Salford City. While at the Ammies, Tolaj played 17 games across all competitions, but failed to score in the league. In January 2023, the striker would join Scottish Championship club Dundee on loan until the end of the season.

However, injuries meant that the striker only played three games for the club and was released by Brighton last summer.

Since signing for Aldershot, Tolaj has four goals in 14 league appearances so far this season. This included scoring two goals in his debut, a 5-2 win over Oxford City.

In the opposition dugout

Aldershot’s new man in the dugout is former midfielder Tommy Widdrington, after he took over in April.

During his playing career, Widdrington made over 370 appearances across the Football League, before playing non-league football for five seasons.

Beginning his career at Southampton, he played over 80 games for the Saints with a majority coming in the Premier League, before being sold to Grimsby in 1996.

At the Mariners, Widdrington helped the club win the Football League trophy and gain promotion out of the Second Division in 1998.

A year later, he joined Port Vale after initially impressing on loan, making over 80 appearances in two seasons there. This included him captaining the side that won the Football League trophy in 2001.

In the summer of 2001, Widdrington joined fellow-League Two side Hartlepool United. Success continued for the midfielder as he helped the club win promotion out of League Two in the 2002/03 season, before being transferred to Macclesfield Town.

Widdrington played two seasons at the club before joining non-league side Salisbury City, and retiring in 2010.

His managerial career began with Salisbury, before he joined Southend United as part of the backroom staff in July 2010. After a short spell at the club, Widdrington had a spell as Hemel Hempstead Town as their first team manager.

In February 2012, he was appointed as manager of Eastbourne Borough and would spend the next five years at the club, earning consistent mid-table finishes with the club.

Widdrington then joined Bristol Rovers as part of their backroom team, and would spend four years at the Pirates.

He then returned to management in December 2021 with King’s Lynn Town, the club second-from-bottom of the National League. Despite his best efforts, the club was relegated to the National League North.

The 2022/23 season was a positive one for Widdrington’s side, as they pushed the title all season. In April 2023, the club was second in the league before Widdrington resigned to join Aldershot Town.

Last time out

The Moors’ last win against Aldershot was back in August 2022, as we started last season with a 1-4 win at the Recreation Ground.

There was four different goal scorers, as Joe Sbarra, Callum Howe, Andrew Dallas and Ben Coker topped a perfect performance to begin the campaign.

A similar result would continue our great home form, and extend our unbeaten run to an incredible 15 games in the Vanarama National League
