James Gale's first goal in a Moors shirt was not enough to claim all three points, as they drew 1-1 to Wealdstone at Damson Park.

Team News

Following their away win at the Shay on Monday, Andy Whing made one change to the side that started against Halifax Town, with Conor Wilkinson coming in to replace Jack Stevens who misses out on the matchday squad.

On the substitute bench was academy graduate Kyle Moseley, who comes off the back of winning the Academy Player of the Month award.

Match Report

James Gale opened his account for Solihull Moors, but it was not enough as they drew 1-1 against Wealdstone.

The away side began the game with a shot on goal after three minutes, Anthony Georgiou curling a free-kick from 30 yards towards Laurie Walker’s near-post. But the keeper comfortably claimed the ball.

Five minutes later, the Moors had a shot of their own after some passing play on the left led to Conor Wilkinson with the ball inside the penalty area. His shot to the near-post was deflected out for a corner. From the corner, there was a scramble in the six-yard box with Sam Bowen looking to score against his former club. But the Wealdstone defence did enough to clear the danger.

On 15 minutes, Wilkinson received the ball 30 yards out before turning his marker and curling a low shot towards the bottom right corner, but his shot went just wide of the target.

The Moors continued the pressure and Archie Matthews was called into action on 24 minutes to deny Jamey Osborne. Some great passing play from Wilkinson and Warburton, before Osborne struck the ball first-time on the edge of the box. His shot looked to go in, but Matthews pushed the ball past the post.

Four minutes later, Walker made another smart save after Wealdstone had played the ball on the left-hand side for Micah Obiero. He got the ball inside the box and shot towards the near-post of Walker’s goal, but the keeper was equal to the effort.

On 34 minutes, Wilkinson picked up the ball on the left-hand side and cut inside before shooting with his left. His powerful shot forced Matthews to tip the ball over the bar.

Four minutes later, the Moors won the ball back deep inside the Wealdstone half before Osborne again tested his luck on the edge of the box, however again it went just wide of the goal.

On 41 minutes, a loose pass from the Wealdstone defence saw James Gale through on goal after the forward intercepted the ball. With only the keeper to beat, Gale tried to chip the ball over Matthews but was denied.

Less than a minute later, Gale would open the scoring after a well-worked set-piece routine. A corner was taken short by Osborne, before a cross was whipped in towards the middle of the penalty box. Gale jumped the highest an nodded the ball into the far-corner to make it 1-0.

In the second half, the Moors continued where they left off as Osborne had another strike in the opening couple of minutes, but his shot was comfortably saved by Matthews.

On 56 minutes, Wealdstone equalised against the run of play. Some good passing play on the right-hand side as a dangerous cross was sent in by Enzio Boldewijn, and was turned into his own net by Alex Whitmore.

The Moors responded well to conceding, as on 67 minutes, Wilkinson was played in behind on the right-hand side before dribbling to the by-line and cutting the ball back for Gale to shoot. Gale’s shot though went just wide of the near-post.

On 75 minutes, Osborne had a free-kick on the right-hand side of the pitch and sent in a perfect cross for Gale to attack. Gale’s header was going in and needed saving from Matthews, who pushed the ball away from danger.

With six minutes of the game remaining, the away side passed the ball down the left-hand side with Brandon Mason cutting the ball back for Callum McFarlane to shoot from six yards out. But Walker produced a brilliant reaction stop to keep the score level.

In the last minute of the game, a Moors corner fell to Bowen in the penalty box who shot towards goal and looked certain to score. However, the Wealdstone defence blocked the shot on the line as the Moors were forced to settle for a point against Wealdstone.

Another match at Damson Park next for the Moors, as we host Forest Green Rovers on the 7th September in the Vanarama National League.
