In the opposite dugout – John Askey

John Askey was appointed interim manager until the end of the season on 13 November 2021 after leaving his role as manager of League Two club Port Vale earlier in the year. After a successful start to his reign he was given the job permanently in March 2022 having steered the club into a play-off position and promotion back to the National League.

The 57-year-old previously spent five years as manager of Macclesfield Town, whom he won the National League with during 2017/18 with one of the smallest budgets in the fifth tier. He also managed the Silkmen to a runners-up place in the Buildbase FA Trophy in 2016/17. He went on to manage Shrewsbury Town before taking the role at Port Vale.

Askey has been described as an attacking-minded manager with a reputation for playing attractive football.
