Moors out of Senior Cup after late goals...

Solihull Moors exited the Birmingham Senior Cup following a second round defeat at Nuneaton Borough at Liberty Way on Tuesday night.

The hosts were first to trouble Moors’ backline as Carl Baker found space before taking aim, as Sam Lomax comfortably held.

Dan Sweeney, back from his recent loan spell at Hednesford, did well to cut inside and sting Cam Belford’s palms with a shot from 20-yards out.

George Carline’s trademark long throw came into effect just short of the half hour mark as he hurled one into the box, which fell to Jordan Murphy on the edge of the box who fired over.

Some attacking intent down the right from Nuneaton resulted in Ryan Edmunds drilling a low ball across the box, but Harry Flowers did well to make a last-ditch interception and clear to safety.

Lomax was called into two smart saves in quick succession. First saving from Edmunds, before Ryan Jennings hit a rasping drive that had to be tipped over the bar.

Half-time: Nuneaton Borough 0-0 Solihull Moors

The visitors began the second half with intent as Callum Coyle got in behind the Borough defence, skipped round Belford before the ‘keeper did well to get back on his line and hold the shot.

The home side then went back up the other end as Dior Angus breached the Moors backline and cut the ball back to Baker who forced an expert save out of Lomax, who tipped round the post.

After coming close in the first half, Edmunds fancied his chances in the second. The striker picked the ball up midway into the Moors half and unleashed the best effort of the game as it fizzed narrowly wide of the right post.

Next to try his luck was Corey O’Keeffe as Solihull won a free kick 30-yards out. The on-loan Birmingham man stepped up and curled his strike towards the opposite corner straight into the arms of Belford.

The Moors came so close to taking the lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. Michael Herve played in Murphy who took an exquisite touch past the defender, closed in on goal and clipped his shot off the outside of the post.

The opener finally came just minutes away from the full-time whistle. A stonewall penalty was waved play on by the referee as Angus tucked the ball home to put Nuneaton into the lead.

Edmunds then wrapped the game up a minute later with an outstanding strike from 35 yards that beat Lomax all ends up as Nuneaton sealed their place in the next round.
