Solihull Moors are in the hat for Monday’s Emirates FA Cup first-round proper draw after a dogged and determined 1-0 victory away at Barrow AFC.
Liam Daly’s 52nd minute header settled the fourth qualifying round tie in a game where the hosts threw everything at Tim Flowers’ side.
The Moors were quick out of the blocks as they looked for a positive start. Lee Vaughan tried his luck at goal with a curling shot with the outside of his boot that had to be palmed away by Joel Dixon.
Lewis Hardcastle should have given Barrow the lead after 12 minutes. The number 10 found himself free inside the penalty area after the ball was pulled back but, leaning back, he fired over.
Ryan Boot then had to be alert to tip over a John Rooney free kick that would’ve dipped just under the crossbar.
The Moors stopper was at it again from the resulting corner as Sam Hird found himself free inside the area, before firing at Boot who reacted expertly to maintain a level scoreline.
The Bluebirds enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening 45 minutes and some of that patient build-up almost rewarded them with a goal. Scott Quigley was the man who got in behind, but his fizzed ball across goal evaded those in the middle.
Then came the best chance of the half. The tricky Hardcastle jinked his way towards goal before seeing his shot rebound back off the base of Boot’s left-hand post as the Moors survived.
Moors saw chances few and far between as Jamey Osborne teed up Gavin Gunning to strike, but it sailed comfortably over Dixon’s crossbar.
Half-time: Barrow AFC 0-0 Solihull Moors
After withstanding the first half pressure, the Moors snatched the lead seven minutes into the second period. Gunning’s corner kick was met in the middle by Daly who nodded home after getting to the ball ahead of Dixon in amongst a number of bodies.
The Barrow backline then looked fragile and the Moors aimed to take advantage of that. Jake Beesley went up to challenge with Dixon and, after the ‘keeper dropped the ball, Danny Wright saw his shot cleared off the line by Patrick Brough.
The home faithful thought that they had grabbed an equaliser as Dior Angus shoved Boot over the line after a cross was claimed – the referee gave the Moors ‘keeper a free kick.
Hardcastle then worked some space after skipping past Kyle Storer before putting too much power onto his shot as it flew over.
Osborne, who was on the floor, did well to retrieve the ball before driving towards goal. His run was halted, so he set up Gunning who powered a shot at Dixon who did well to save.
Then from a dangerous free kick position, Rooney tested Boot who got down low to tip the ball around the post.
Josh Kay then found Boot in his way before Hird’s header on the rebound was somehow lifted over the top of the bar.
Further pressure on the Moors goal came to nothing as the team sealed their place in the first-round proper for the fourth season running.
